With numerous ways to connect with customers through social media, e-mail and newsletter marketing may not be high on your priorities.

However, study after study by market research companies shows that consumers still prefer to be contacted by e-mail by the brands they have purchased from.

Think about it from your own personal experience. You receive an e-mail offer from a brand you trust, an exclusive offer that's just for you based on the purchases you've made before. It's highly likely that you'll open the e-mail, even if you don't intend to purchase. You'll check the e-mail in case there's something that's interesting.

Creating an e-mail marketing strategy is a great investment in developing a long-term relationship with your customers, and it doesn't have to take up too much of your time to make it work for your business. Because once created, you can automate the newletters to be sent.

Here are some tips for best practice in e-mail marketing:

  1. Create a series of emails that you can send to your customer, start with a simple "Thank you for the first order" e-mail. Create 2nd and 3rd e-mails to the customer, these can be set-up either following seasonal events or by the type of purchases the customer has made.
  2. Keep them regular, but not too frequent, no-one likes to be bombarded by e-mails. In fact people will unsubscribe if the frequency of the e-mails become annoying. Test the frequency to assess what's best for your business.
  3. Get customer feedback so you can refine your messaging.
  4. Create a newsletter cycle so that as new customers join your mailing list, they get the first, 2nd, 3rd email in the series you've created.
  5. Make the message in subject header eye-catching. Test the message to see which gets the biggest open rates.
  6. Unsubscribe feature. Its important to observe the regulations for e-mail marketing. In the UK, The Data Protection Act is there to protect consumers and businesses. If you are starting a new business, it's important to prioritise tasks that are most important. Return on investment isn't just a benefit of marketing investment; it's a way to think about how much time and effort you invest.

Richard Koch’s book "The 80/20 principle" is about concentrating attention on results. He uses Pareto's theory that 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes. You can use the principle to prioritise marketing activity.

For instance, when you can identify 20% of the customers/clients that yield 80% of profits for your business, you can look for more clients that have similar characteristics.

How about identifying 20% of the tasks that generate 80% of output? or figuring out 80% of the tasks that can be delegated to free up more time on the tasks that only you can do?

This principle works when you consider the science. Research conducted by psychologists about our ability to multitask showed that switching between tasks is not without consequences such as reduction in memory, productivity and performance.

Working out your priorities requires the focus of one task at a time, when combined with the 80/20 principle, you'll find that you'll achieve more with less.

How to define and create a memorable personality for your brand.

Branding differentiates your product or service from your competitor. If you're a manufacturer with great products, such as women's fashion, you'll need a strong and memorable brand that will set you apart from your competitors.

  1. Identify what's special about your product - for instance, is it vintage or modern, is it handmade?
  2. Describe what your product does or is - for instance for women's fashion you might want to be specific about whether your products are for women of a specific age group or sizing
  3. Personality - What do you stand for? Are you funny, quirky, mindful or considered?

Jot down your ideas and create a mood board of brands which you feel are close to your brand personality. When you've created your mood board, you'll identify a few common threads. What are the colours or the style and tone of voice of the brands that you've identified?

Create a mood board

A mood board is a great way to identify and provide you with inspiration for your brand's personality.

Keep this mood board in mind when you create your logo and brand identity. You can use it to identify the type of fonts you prefer, the colours and the imagery.

Never copy an existing brand slavishly, your identity should be unique. Your moodboard will help you describe your brand's personality and attributes in a way that is authentic to you.

Being memorable is about making your brand unique and consistent in the way it's presented, whether in social media, on your website or on a printed brochure.

Once you can describe your brand and what it stands for, think about the type of adjectives you'll use to describe your products and create a statement on how you use words to describe your products.

Once you have done this, you'll have a brand personality and style to reference that's unique to you.

Using social media increases your online brand visibility. Better still by developing the right social media activities, it can also be your opportunity to connect and engage with your target audience.

And that means it can become an effective marketing strategy for generating business leads and sales for you.

There are a few things that you can do with your Social Media strategy:

1)    Make it relevant. Getting seen by your audience is controlled by how the social media channels run their businesses. Similar to search engines, Social Media companies use “algorithms” that contain customer data such as interests, purchases, behaviour such as the topics they follow and serve content people see as relevant and personalised.

Think about what your audience is interested in and how you can relate your product or service in a relevant way to their interests.

2)    Search results. Although there is no direct correlation with how a website will rank in search listings, social media account profiles get displayed in the context of search results. In many cases, the social media profile is among the top search listing for a business.

Consider how you can create a consistent brand identity and tone of voice to strengthen your online branding.

3)    Social channels have search engines too. People can discover company content when using search within their preferred social media account. Make sure you optimise search for your social content.

4)    Customer feedback. Once you open yourself up to social media, you will need to manage the customer comments on your social channels.  Good or bad, they will reflect your brand’s reputation. Consider how you will handle negative and positive feedback.

Getting started in Social

If your business is just getting started, you may have limited resources; it’s better then to concentrate your efforts on the social media channels that will achieve the right results for your business.

Instead of creating a social media account across every channel, consider which ones and why.

Here’s an overview of the top three social media channels and how they can be used to promote your business.

Facebook. Nurtures conversations with your target audience.

With 67% of the UK population using Facebook, it’s an obvious one to consider.

Start by creating a Facebook page, with a profile photo and cover image; these should represent how you want your business to be seen. Include links to your website and contact information.  

Make sure the “About” section is competed. It tells people what your business does and why you are different. This is your opportunity to make your brand stand out to your target audience.

You can use it to nurture existing customers.  Responding to any customer comments or queries promptly demonstrates you care about your customers.

Encourage your audience to participate and engage with your brand.

Twitter fosters discovery, consider it as a way to discover more about your audience.

Twitter has a powerful search tool that enables you to search for topic keywords, hashtags or follow ongoing conversations about news or interests that are relevant to your business. By doing using the search feature, you’ll get a good idea of the type of content engages your target audience; you can then use this information to plan your Twitter content.

Instagram is a channel that gives you the equivalent of your shop window.

Think about creating a regular series of different types of content (Pillars) which allow your audience to get to know and expect your content on a regular basis, such as behind the scenes. 

People love to connect with brands that are authentic and show them how they create their products. 

Ask your customers to send in images featuring your product and showcase them on your channel.

Showcase product demos, educate them on why your product serves a purpose. 

Provide some human stories from your staff or share stories that your customers are willing to share. 

Creating a Social media framework

Once you’ve identified the channels you want to set-up, consider creating a Social media framework so that you have a template for creating content.

  • Defines the type of content you create that will be relevant to your audiences. It helps to identify the content pillars for your brand.
  • Takes into account the reasons and ways people interact with social media: For discovery, entertainment/engagement and participation.

When you have created your social media framework, this will help you define the frequency of the content by type. By doing this, you will be creating a content calendar, and this is useful to ensure you post content on a regular basis.

I am often asked by business owners what tips I have about marketing for small businesses. So here are my top 10 tips about marketing for small businesses:

1) Know what your brand stands for. 

Work out how to describe your business/product or service in one succinct sentence that will motivate your potential customer to buy from you.

2) Get to know who your customers are.

Find some common attributes about your best customers – are they mostly women or men? Where do they live? What interests do they have? Paint a pen portrait of your customer; you’ll be able to work out where to look for more like them.

3) Encourage your customers to buy more from you.

It’s more expensive to acquire a new customer than it is to get an existing one to buy from you. Find a reason for them to come back to you.

4) Get your customers to recommend you.

Get a few endorsements from customers and use simple tactics such as a “member-get-member” leaflet alongside any product or service you sell.

5) Test, refine and roll-out.

Use this principle to learn and understand how to improve your marketing effort.

6) Work out your marketing/sales ratio.

Set aside a percentage of the profit from your target number of sales for marketing activities – make sure you measure the return on your investment – building awareness takes time, don’t expect to achieve your sales target immediately. Consider coverage, reach and frequency, it can take at least five times for someone to see your advertisement or sales message before they decide to buy.

7) Use your social media channels.

You have a personal network of friends and colleagues, you can use your personal connections to extend the reach of your business. In addition to this, make sure you have a business profile for your business set-up too. Think about how you will use the social media channels for marketing to engage and attract people to your business.

9) Create a unique selling proposition. 

Don’t promote on price – customers can and will shop around – find a way to create value which customers can’t find anywhere else, leverage on quality, experience or service instead.

10) Make sure your marketing effort is efficient. 

If you’re spending a lot of time on marketing activity that doesn’t generate much in return, even if it hasn’t cost you anything – think about your labour in terms of cost. If you run your own business your time is precious – don’t waste it on work that isn’t effective. Get an expert to show you how – in the long run, it will save you time and money and help your business grow.

Finally, the last thing I would like to the list is to approach every marketing effort with the hope and tenacity, a bit like raising a family.
